Durango, Colorado Named Top Value Ski Spot

A good pair of skis makes all the difference when carving turns in Colorado

The most affordable ski destination in North America is Durango, Colorado, with a total TripIndex Ski cost of $210, which is about half the cost of the average of all destinations on a leading index ranking. Bend, Oregon is the second most affordable spot.

Skiers looking for a trip this winter can consider strapping on their skis on the slopes at Durango.

Durango, Colorado, and the surrounding San Juan Mountains is an ideal destination for your a Colorado winter vacation. There is a variety of exhilarating winter activities that are sure to make your stay a memorable experience.

You can traverse hundreds of miles of well-groomed trails that weave through the foothills and slopes of the San Juan Mountains. Or you can embark on a snowshoeing adventure through snow-covered alpine forests.

And if that’s not enough, you can take a high-octane snowmobiling excursion through the countless mountain trails that zigzag the Durango area, or experience Colorado’s natural beauty in memorable fashion on a dog sledding trip.

Durango features a 10,822 ft. ski area, named Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort and the 8,800 ft. at the Hesperus Ski Area.

Whether you are skiing, boarding, trailing or mobiling, there are some 35,000 acres of breathtaking mountain terrain to explore.

With an average annual snowfall of 250 inches, there’s sure to be plenty of fresh powder to slice through during a downhill run or cross-country foray. You can get to play dare devil at one of the many area terrain parks, half pipes, or freestyle areas, or glide across the Durango countryside on a challenging cross-country skiing trip.

But you will want to take a day off from whooshing. The historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers trips aboard the Polar Express (November 19 through December 28). On January 1st, the railroad’s Cascade Train strikes out through the spectacular canyons of the San Juan National Forest to Cascade Canyon for the remainder of the late winter season.

Getting to Durango by air is not difficult. The Durango-La Plata Airport services the region and there are numerous daily non-stop flights from Denver and Phoenix.
