Expect the unexpected
Bruce Poon Tip was to eventually become one of the world’s ‘newest’ and greatest explorers. He became driven to share his passion and vision for experiencing adventures in an authentic and sustainable manner.
With nothing more than his own personal credit cards, Gap Adventures was born. What started off as a one-man office has grown to become the world’s largest adventure travel company with 850 employees in over 100 countries.
Gap Adventures is a team of explorers seeking to experience the real world with a grassroots approach to travel. The travel company has won numerous awards for creating adventures that are meaningful and memorable.
Today, Gap Adventures offers more than 1,000 small group experiences, safaris, and expeditions on all seven continents. Some 100,000 travelers take a Gap trip every year.
And the choices are vast – from safaris and cultural treks to family vacations and exotic expeditions, there is an adventure for everyone.
Typical Gap adventurers share a lust of life and have an insatiable curiosity about truly experiencing the world we live in, and embark on a quest for the extraordinary.
The top ten adventure destinations seem to be (at least this year) Costa Rica, Peru, Tanzania, Turkey, Namibia, India, Brazil, Thailand, Antartica and China.
GAP Adventures, given the philosophy, enthusiastic and caring staff and the destinations offered, has provided “life changing” experiences for many young people. In fact, it even happens to the staff at Gap. One Gapper, as the staff are called, expressed her experience this way. “My life was changed forever when my boyfriend proposed at the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. During my travels, I have enjoyed many extraordinary experiences that have shaped and changed the way I see the world”.
And from a Gap Adventurer …
“I travelled to the far reaches of northern India on Gap Adventures’ well-named ‘Jewels of North India’ tour. I remember one very special night in Varanasi I boarded a boat and rested on the waters of the Ganga. As I looked around I experienced complete spiritual euphoria and my passion for this country became perfectly clear. Bhupendra Sharma was the guide, and just a wonderful man. He helped make my experience in India all that I could have hoped for and more.
Now, I have a business in Adelaide importing Indian home wares to Australia. Thanks Gap Adventures, you really have changed my life”.
Gap Adventures has been consistently recognized by many organizations for leadership and outstanding business practices. National Geographic Adventure rated Gap Adventures as the “Best Do It All Outfitter” on Earth in an international competition in 2008. And for seven consecutive years, the prestigious magazine selected a Gap Adventures tour as one of its 25 Best New Adventure Trips of the Year. Gap Adventures is also among the Top 100 Employers and 50 Best Managed Companies.
Last April, Apple Inc. sent videographers to Gap’s Toronto offices as part of a series of short films showcasing dynamic, innovative companies (that use Apple products on a daily basis).
Determined to lead his industry in sustainable tourism and community development initiatives, Poon Tip founded the non-profit Planeterra Foundation in 2003 to make a positive difference in the lives of people around the world.
In recognition of Poon Tip’s dedication to ethical business practices and responsible travel, he received the Ethics in Action Award, World Savers Award by Condé Nast Traveler, as well as the Travel and Leisure Global Vision Leadership Award for voluntourism. He has also received the Global Traders award for his groundbreaking ideas in exporting services.
Poon Tip has spoken at the United Nations launch of the Year of Eco Tourism in New York. He has also been invited by the World Bank and UNESCO to represent a team visiting the People’s Republic of China to lecture on Sustainable Development, and has also been an advisor to the popular CBS television show Survivor.
