Today we take it for granted that there will be a motel or hotel at the next exit – wherever we may be – but that was not always the case.
But motels and hotels, as we know them today, haven’t been around forever.
The first motel in the United States opened in 1925, was named the Milestone Motel, and the price of a room was $2.50. In fact the motel, situated along Highway 101 just north of San Luis Obispo, is still there.
The motel was later re-named Motel Inn. The motel had individual units with parking outside the front door, which was to become norm of motels and motor courts.
To this day, the façade, bell tower and even the original sign of the Motel Inn is still standing.
